When you read novels you watch the action in your mind’s eye. You rarely need to go back and find facts because the information is hooked into the story. Our brains are wired for storytelling. Even two-year-olds hold in their minds the facts and details of a story. When you read legal text, you don’t visualize, you analyze. If you don’t recognize the importance of something to your analysis – you will have to go back and find it again. Reading facts like a legal analysis creates gaps in your fact recall because the brain is also designed to skip over what isn’t relevant to a particular inquiry. Take advantage of your brain’s preference for storytelling and it’s ability to hold images (a picture is worth 1,000 words, right) and save you legal thinking cap for the analysis.
